Effective waterproofing for your iPhone

It’s been the downfall of many a mobile phone and hasn’t really had a notable adversary up this point. But thanks to Liquipel, water is about to be struck from the record as the enemy of the mobile. Dropping your mobile into your morning coffee, the kitchen sink or even the toilet (admit it, it happens) won’t be as consequential as it used to be thanks to Liquipel who have created a clear coating that will protect mobile phones from most forms of water damage.

This coating is apparently made out of pure nanotech which is ‘bled’ into every part of the phone and it doesn’t matter what model the phone is. For those of us who like our phones slim it also won’t make the profile of the mobile device any bigger.

This coating is apparently ‘1,000 times thinner than a human hair,’ according to Danny McPhail, the co-president of Liquipel. This is essentially an impermeable coating that will be absorbed into every possible opening of your phone.

To demonstrate how well it works at the Liquipel booth at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show an iPhone 4 protected by Liquipel was dunked into water and then removed to show that it still worked perfectly.
While Liquipel is highly effective it is not 100% waterproof and users should not go out there trying to prove that it is. The Liquipel website states: “Just because your device has been further protected it does not mean it can be used in this way. It is similar to buying a case for your device and asking to throw it at the ground.”

Prices of Liquipel start from USD59 and go up to USD79.

ComScore reports Android nears 50% mark

comScore has just published their new report on the US smartphone market and it turns out that there are no dramatic changes to be witnessed. Android continued to be the fastest growing mobile platform that managed to keep its lead despite the launch of the iPhone 4S.

Over the space of three months ending 30 November 2011, 46.9% of US smartphone users had a Google OS device. This is 3.1 percent points higher than the Android market share for the three months prior to this.

iOS came in second place but by some distance with 1.4 percent point and a market share of 28.7%. RIM’s continued to struggle as BlackBerry OS lost further 3.1 percent points – it now only powers 16.6% of smartphones in the US.

Symbian and Microsoft didn’t perform spectacularly either, each dropping 0.5 and 0.3 percent points of their market shares respectively.

Even though Android is doing well, the second part of the comScore report indicates that Apple is the only company to register the highest growth in the past three months.

App downloads reach billion mark

2011 went out with an app download ‘bang!’ with a huge spike in apps downloads and device activations in its last week. This was probably due to festive season gifts and amounted to 1,2 billion iOS and Android apps. The previous weekly record was 857 million downloads.

This record also marked an increase of 60% in apps that were downloaded compared to earlier in December. The US led the pack with 509 million downloads.

Surprisingly, countries that aren’t officially religious didn’t fare too badly with China being the second highest downloading region with 99 million downloads. China does, however, celebrate Christmas as a global holiday that accompanies Chinese New Year, both of which encourage the giving of gifts.

With much of the world’s population still not on the smartphone market the potential for the billion download mark to be reached in non-holiday weeks in 2012 is high.

Online is where it’s at

Going online seems to be the new destination of choice with studies finding that Americans are spending more and more of their leisure time online.

Research conducted by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project showed that in a group of 18 to 29 year olds, 53 percent go online every day to pass time.

These results haven’t come as a great surprise considering the decline in support for radio, record companies, television and print. More and more young people are growing their social lives online and advertisers are therefore following them.

This means that sites like Google, Facebook, YouTube and Amazon should see more and more advertisers wanting to target them there.

Spending more time online is not restricted to youngsters. Pew said that 58 percent of ALL adults use the internet for fun on a daily basis while a third will browse the internet occasionally. This is a significant increase from Pew’s 2009 study.

“When they have some down time, more and more of them are finding the Internet a fun, diverting place to spend their leisure moments,” said the study’s author, Lee Rainie.

This increase in usage is probably as a result of the convenience of the internet now that broadband connections, streaming video and social networking sites are standard. Online browsing is also starting to replace other leisure activities like hanging out with friends or taking a walk.

But the grass is not all green here. Negative patterns like “Facebook Depression” and “Internet Addiction Disorder” are becoming more and more common and parents are concerned that online social networking could replace good old fashioned face-to-face interaction.

Whether this shift to socialising more online than offline is a good or bad thing, it seems to be the direction we’re headed in.

Google plans to launch a music service

Google Inc is trying to lead the pack of audio-entertainment distribution with the launch of its new online store. With over 13 million songs, Google Music will be integrated with Android Market, its online store for smartphone apps and videos. This should help Google Inc catch up with rivals like Apple, Amazon and Facebook.

Users will be able to access music from a number of internet-connected devices and share these tracks with their friends.

Google negotiated deals in the US with three of four dominant music companies – Vivendi SA’s Universal Music Group, Sony Corp’s Sony Music Entertainment and Emi. Google also signed with strong independent label group Merlin, and London-based Beggar’s Banquet, who Adele is signed to. Analysts speculate that Google Music’s appeal will be limited because it doesn’t have any Warner Music artists, including major sellers Led Zeppelin and Prince.

Analysts see this music service as a key factor in lifting Google’s revenue but it will still have to make sure that its Android-based mobile offerings can compete. Android is the leading smartphone operating system and powers in the region of 200 million devices globally. Without a music service, the Android-based smartphones and tablets won’t appeal to users who want a rich media experience.

Music storage is now moving from being device based to ‘cloud’ based and Google and Apple have to find ways to keep users locked into respective mobile services.

BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis says:

“Everyone is using music and media as a jail. Ultimately, this stuff is going to be stored in the cloud and it becomes harder and harder to switch systems.”

Google is giving a boost to their new music store by giving users a free song a day to download. Users can then share songs with friends on Google+, Google’s social network. A user’s friends will be able to get a ‘free, full-play’ of the songs the user has purchased.

Google’s director of content partnerships for Android, Zahavah Levine said:

“Recommendations from friends are the single most important way that people discover music and we think that this feature has the potential to really transform purchasing behavior.”

While music sales have been down over the last few years, music usage has never been so popular in social networks and mobile devices. In September, Facebook unveiled a tab for music services like Spotify, Rdio and MOG so that users can share music on Facebook.

Growth of mobile poker

There can be very little argument that the gambling industry has benefited greatly from the online casino market, with great websites like our own Platinum Play providing a quality casino experience that in many cases is actually better than the real thing.

It has also been fairly obvious that in the time since casinos went live online, that poker has been the one game that has thrived above all others. The meteoric rise in pokers popularity as a TV event can be traced back to the number of people learning to play the game online, and then taking that new knowledge to the real casino tournaments, where many have not only held their own, but won on a regular basis.

In recent years, the feeling has been that the poker craze has somewhat levelled off, but with the introduction of mobile poker, it looks set for another major popularity upsurge. Smartphone’s and tablet PC’s like the iPad are perfect platforms for the game of poker, and as the technology has advanced, so has the desire for fun games and apps that can make the transition from the big screen to the small.

Now the popularity of poker is seeing another rise in popularity, and it’s all down to Smartphone’s, and once again, the online casino is at the heart of the revolution. Microgaming and Platinum Play have teamed up to offer their players a great version of mobile poker, as well as a bunch of their other favourite games, so that they can now play on the go.

Best of all, new players who want to get in on the mobile video poker action at Platinum Play are in for a real treat with a 50/50 double action bonus currently available for newbies. With so much time spent on the road, or standing in line, downloading the free mobile version of Platinum Play is a great way to kill some time.

iCloud almost launches

Apple plans to introduce a cloud-based storage and syncing service called iCloud to the public today. But so far only a few people have been able to log in.

Users who have an Apple ID and go to iCloud.com and sign in to the service cannot actually use the service unless they have a developer account. Apparently the full release will happen later today.

Once in iCloud, users can view, add or change contacts, events in the calendar and store docs in the cloud with the iWork’s application.

Plus, iPhone users with an account can use iCloud to find the device and see it on a map. The application can also lock remotely or wipe information if the handset has been stolen or misplaced.

Apple’s plans to launch iCloud was announced earlier this year at the Worldwide Developers Conference. Apple also said that iCloud would be able to automatically sync all devices, that includes iPhones, iPads and computers with the user’s music, apps and iBook. Users can also use iCloud as a backup service with 5 GB of free storage.

In June it was predicted by RBC Capital Markets that up to 150 million users would sign up for the iCloud service.

My daily commute to work has me driving halfway, and then hopping on a train to finish the journey. It may seem like a bit of a hassle, but when you live in a big city, the time it takes to get to your destination, combined with the cost of parking makes it essential to find alternative travel methods that are both cheaper and less infuriating.

Having said that, spending 30 – 45 minutes on the train can be pretty boring, especially when you are forced to look at the exact same sights every day, but I now have the perfect way to kill that boredom. I simply take out my Smartphone and start up the mobile version of the Platinum Play casino.
Getting it on there couldn’t have been any easier, as all I had to do was scan the QR code on the mobile page of the website, and I was off and running.

Not all the games that you can play in the full version of the casino are there, but there are more than enough to keep everyone happy, with all the best table games and slots just waiting to be played with a quick flick of the finger.

There are also mobile versions available for the iPhone and iPad, as well as for phones that run the Android OS, so pretty much all the mobile bases are covered, no matter what kind of device you pack into your purse.
I’ve now found that I look forward to my daily ride on the train, and the only two problems that I run across are becoming so engrossed in the games that I miss my stop, and trying to prevent myself from whooping with delight whenever I hit a big jackpot. That’s a small price to pay for a ton of exciting casino fun on the go.
